CD Reviews

For fans of late 70's pure Japanese Pop. Pink Lady lives on!

"Remember "Pink Lady and Jeff"? C'mon, both of you - up with the hands! Pink Lady were Mie and Kei (Me and Kay), Japan's top recording act of the late 70's. Jeff was American comedian Jeff Altman. NBC gave them their own show in 1979. It lasted six episodes. So you may wonder why they even released a double CD featuring over 40 songs, most of which are sung in Japanese. My take is this - it's solely for completists like myself and Jeff Branch (THE MAN!). It's frothy, happy, cheesy music. It also features a Japanese version of "In The Navy". They replace the words "in the navy" with "pink lady". That alone ranks it high on the curiosity chart. Thank you Brandon "Golden Gut" Tartikoff!"

"Behold the power of cheese! 70s Japanese pop goddesses Mie and Kei run the gamut from wholesome Nixon-era pop to disco to new wave. All you have to add is a sense of irony! Their Japanese covers of "In The Navy (Pink-A-Lady)" and "Fame" are not to be missed. WARNING: do not listen to "Fame" while drinking liquid, you'll spray it all over when they sing "Remembah, remembah, remembah..." Included are PL classics like "SOS," "Carmen '77" (the very definition of "over the top"), "Southpaw," "Wanted," "UFO" (which they pronounce as "you foe"), "Monster" (complete with screaming), and their 1980 US hit "Kiss in the Dark." Almost all the tracks are in Japanese with a few English words thrown in for marketability. But, no one can ever understand pop lyrics regardless of what language they're in anyway. So, do yourself (and Mie & Kei) a favor by buying TWIN BEST. Empire of the FUN."
