Fascinating Peek at Late 60s England

(4 out of 5 stars)

"I bought this album for the two Pink Floyd tracks ("Interstellar Overdrive" and "Nick's Boogie"), but find that I more often listen to the fascinating, but now generally forgotten, bands which make up the other tracks. Names like Vashti and Chris Farlowe may not ring many bells now, but they were obviously in touch with the times, as they seem to perfectly capture the underground youth culture of England in the late 60s. The music is interspersed with interviews of people from Mick Jagger to Michael Caine, which act as introductions to the music, as they cover issues ranging from youth violence to the loss of the British Empire. If you have any kind of interest in the culture of late-60s England, this CD should be part of your collection. The music, from the Marquess of Kensington's lament about the fall of the aristocracy, to orchestral arrangements of the Rolling Stones's "Paint it Black", to the catchy pop of the Small Faces, to the instrumental experimentation of Pink Floyd, provides a fascinating glimpse into the underground social and music scenes of the time."
Very good album, but more of a collectable.

"This album is very entertaining to listen to, if you have something else you're doing. Unless you are getting high and want some music to accompany you, this isn't the best album to concentrate on. If you are listening to this album, I suggest you have something else to do. Treat it as background music."
