The greatest piano performance of Pictures at an Exhibition is Sviatoslav Richter's live 1958 Sofia recording, currently out of print. While waiting for it to return, you can try one of his others or give Brigitte Engerer a listen. She too gives us an outstanding performance, meeting the enormous technical demands of the music with flair and building some tremendous climaxes. Hers isn't always the subtlest playing in the world, but Pictures is fine on a large canvas. The anonymous piano arrangement of Night on Bald Mountain is also very exciting. This is a fine collection of Mussorgsky on the piano, well played and reasonably priced. --Leslie Gerber
