Last year Ragna Schirmer was awarded an ECHO Klassik award for her recording of Handel's Suites. In her latest recording, she pursues the works that Brahms composed based on the "Aria con variazioni." She impressively illustrates the fact that Brahms' homage to Handel was only one of his many musical facets: for instance, Brahms also chose to live in Vienna, a fact that is easily recognizable from his sixteen charming waltzes, played by the pianist here in the solo version. Finally, in the turbulent rhapsodies, Schirmer shows Brahms the expressive, using rhapsodic freedom of form in sweeping waves of passion.
