Synopsis

Album Description
2009 release. Recorded May through August of 2009 by Gareth Parton at his petite La Planque studio and The Fortress in London, Ovations is the Anglo-French group's 10th album proper. Typically for a Piano Magic record, it's a restless beast; a record that swings wildly between Marrakesh, Eastern Europe, Sevilla and early '80s Manchester without breaking a sweat. Piano Magic have always worn their influences on their sleeves. The Chameleons, Joy Division and The Cure rub shoulders with Turkish darabuka, hammered dulcimer, viola, cello, flamenco claps. Elsewhere there are cold analogue synths, chiming guitars, mournful piano and industrial percussion.

CD Reviews

Dead can Dance Magic
Andrew Macklin | BC,Canada | 02/10/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Piano Magic are much ignored (I personally think due to their crappy name). This cd slunk passed last year without fanfare - and is their best release. It follows the harder feel of the Dark Horses ep and, due to the presence of Brendan Perry (Eye of the Hunter) and Peter Ulrich (Pathways And Dawns) (both ex- Dead Can Dance (Within the Realm of a Dying Sun))has some exotic and magical drumming. Brendan Perry sings twice and after his long absence from music this is a cool drink of water. The lyrics are rich and meaningful throughout, and Cure-ish guitars add occasional lightness."
