Synopsis

Product Description

Philly Joe Jones led a ghost band dedicated to the music of Tadd Dameron. This CD is a presentation of the Grammy-nominated album featuring Johnny Griffin. At the recording session, Griff was prominently positioned in front of the band wearing a white hospital scrub shirt. He asked the band to wave him on if they wanted him to play on more than the agreed upon two selections, and the whole band waved him on. This CD also includes three additional alternate takes, and was digitally remastered by Rudy Van Gelder. Besides Philly Joe, the band features Don Sickler, Benny Powell, Frank Wess, Charles Davis, Cecil Payne, Larry Ridley and Walter Davis Jr.

"This is an album that became an instant favorite the first time I listened to it. Jones really did a number! I'm trying to understand the background of this album, and from what I've read it's a tribute band to Tadd Dameron. I've not heard the original tracks but the ones on this CD are all top-notch. If you're any sort of jazz fan, you'll absolutely love this one!"
