CD Reviews

In Defense of Pop...
James Casey | Arkansas | 03/06/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I attempted to convince my girlfriend, the hard-rocking type, that there was merit in pop music. She looked down her nose disdainfully as did my mother when I told her I bought this album from Sweden. She immediately connected the country with ABBA, and she said, "They were always too bubblegum for me." Well, bubblegum is what I like, and this album is so much more than bubblegum.

In fact, I decided I was going to enjoy my music, and I'm glad that I did. This album is R & B + disco + techno, and it equals the work of a vocal genius. Joback's lung power combined with the catchy rhythms, driving bass lines, and adult-themed songs make "I Feel Good (And I'm Worth It)" one of the best musical investments I've ever made. I highly recommend "Sinner," "Freeway," "Time to Get Tacky," and "I'm Gonna Do It." The ballads, too, share almost equal time with his hypnotic and unique sound. "This is the Year" and "Undress Me" are hopeful, heartfelt songs, and they give the listener an intimate glimpse of where he can go in the future and what he can accomplish if he has the courage to trust someone.

All in all, I'm glad I bought this album, and since I live in Arkansas, I have begun taking every opportunity to proselytize the good name of Peter Joback amongst all of my contacts. Long live pop, and thank goodness it's still popular in Sweden."
