Synopsis

The genius of My Fabulous Plum is that it works on two levels. Peel away the lyrics, which kids 3 to 10 will lock onto instantly, and you're left with music that lulls you along pleasantly, kind of woozily, in the same way switching over to an all-70s, all-the-time radio format might. That's the appeal of Peter Himmelman and what keeps him a favorite among the kids' music cognoscenti: if old Levi's could sing, they might cue up his records. Himmelman, an indie music pioneer who knows his way around a crazy rhyme, could reel in anybody, the giant flying fruit he employs as his vehicle this time out notwithstanding. If you're not partial to purple or food containing pits, climb aboard the fruitcraft anyway: In the course of a dozen songs, you'll come across a couple of friendly worms, an oily moose, and a most congenial octopus. Not to mention that the in-flight food options are deceptively well-rounded. A spoken-word track extols, exuberantly, the virtues of waffles ("Waffles"), and in an earlier song, the delights and monotony of "A World Where You Only Eat Candy" are explored, to spectacularly silly yet genuinely groovy effect. --Tammy La Gorce

CD Reviews

Witty and fun!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Are you being driven insane by kids music that is hyper-sappy, sickeningly cutesy, and--worst of all--prone to getting stuck in your head for days and days? Well, these songs ARE catchy tunes that you'll find yourself singing long after you've dropped your little one off at pre-school, but they are so witty and well-written you won't mind. The lyrics are much more inventive and intellectual than your typical "let's share" children's music, and the tunes are remniscent of rock opera compositions. Highly enjoyable for parent and child!!!"
