Traveling To The Beat Of A Different Drum..
JC Arcila | U S A | 11/23/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Though virtually unknown in the mainstream, the Pastels music has inspired a great many indie pop bands over the years. They pretty much helped spring the C-86/TweePop movement with they're loving revival of shimmering pop melodies in they early 80's.Bands such as the Vaselines, Pooh Sticks, to the whole spirit of Sarah Records owe a great debt to this band. Black Tambourine, (who later split to become Velocity Girl) recorded a song called "Throw Aggi off the Bridge", an amusing Pastels reference. You can even see the influences running in such current bands as Belle and Sebastian, and anyone really with a fondness for wistful, boy girl melodies. If I had to describe the music of the Pastels, I'd have to say luscious melodies with quirky jumps and starts. Boy/Girl vocals not always in tune to the music, but that being exactly what makes them so enjoyable; they're very imperfection. It's done with heart all the way through, and isn't that what really matters in music? If your new to the music of The Pastels, this is a lovely way to start. The CD packs such pop classics as Truck Train Tractor, Nothing To Be Done, Sometimes I Think About You, Crawl Babies, Different Drum and they're version of Daniel Johnston's classic "Speeding Motorcycle". Recommended listening for any avid fan of pop music!"
Five stars and still not the best pastels record out there

"I'd have gotten this for their version of the Stone Poneys Different Drum ' alone . you should listen to that one first .There are a whole lot of boy / girl fuzzie guitar pop bands out there but i'd have to say the the pastels are one of the few who can really pull it off . the great about this cd is that you get to hear the pastels develop over the years . there's the droney songs , the more singsong ones . . . sleepy , can't say much more without making even less sense than I already am .So you should pick this one up ."
