CD Reviews

It Smokes!
Kurt Harding | Boerne TX | 04/06/2010
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Though I was pretty heavily into Passport back in the 70s and 80s, I hadn't thought much about them in recent years until just the other day when a friend mentioned how good Back To Brazil seemed to be after he heard a few clips from it. So because I am always cruising for new music, I looked it up and ordered it sight unseen and within just a few days I was enjoying it at home.

Frankly, I was pretty surprised at how good it sounded just the first time through! Back To Brazil really smokes! Though there are a few energetic cuts that might remind the well-rounded listener of Gato Barbieri, the rest of the CD is pure Doldinger.

There is not much I don't care for, Airport is about the only cut that stands out as kind of a dog to my ears, so here are my favorites: Samba Cinema, Praia do Flamengo, and Moon Over Bahia, all of which in some way evoke Barbieri; Aurora and Bellydance which sound like the Passport of old; Boogie, a funky cut that has Doldinger written all over it; the delightful bonus track Das Boot and a roaring The Cat From Katmandu.

On Back to Brazil, Klaus Doldinger proves he still has a musical vision and the talent to make that vision bear fruit. Whether you are new to Passport or an old time fan, Back To Brazil packs enough punch to have you wanting more. Check it out, you should be delighted."
