"This is a tremendous CD, with Clark Terry on Trumpet & Flugelhorn, Bobby Durham on Drums, NHOP on bass, Joe Pass Guitar, Oscar Peterson Piano and Milt Jackson Vibes is from the Montreux Jazz Festival in July 1977. The surprising element here is that also playing is Ronnie Scott on Tenor Sax. I knew that he was a good player but not this good.
You can also see most of these recordings on DVD as well because this CD duplicates most of the Clark Terry Sextet '77 DVD (Norman Granz Jazz in Montreux). The only difference is that Cote D'Azur (track 1) is replaced by an amazing version of Donna Lee on the DVD
The highlights on the CD for me is the stunning 13 minute version of 'Samba De Orfeu' and the beautiful lyrical version of 'God Bless the Child'. All the musicians get a chance to stretch out on 'Samba...' with NHOP keeping the latin feel running throughout the length of the track. Oscar Peterson's superb Piano solo and Clark Terry's immaculate playing being the best solos of a fine selection by all the musicians.
Sadly Milt Jackson, NHOP, Joe Pass & Ronnie Scott are no longer with us, but this recording reminds us just how good these guys were at their peak.
