"These 11 superbly played overtures are taken from the Gilbert & Sullivan operettas on EMI by Sir Malcolm Sargent and the Pro Arte Orchestra. The complete operettas (of which some can still be purchased) are personal favorites of mine because of the very fine singing and spirited orchestral playing, as evidenced in this collection. Although these performances were made between 1957 and 1961, you would never guess it from the fine detailed sound of the disc. As part of EMI's aptly named "Classics For Pleasure" series of recordings, I can recommend this CD without any reservations to anyone. Whether you're a diehard Gilbert and Sullivan fan or simply a first time listener curious about this talented duo, you can't help but love this tuneful disc. I would also recommend exploring their complete operetta recordings and a movie called "Topsy-Turvy" which is about their making of "The Mikado". Our friends at Amazon.com have these items available for purchase too. Cheerio!"
