" A Life of a Tsar" is tragic based on the real life events, depicting the Heroic Ivan Susanin sacraficing himself to rid Russia of Polish invaders. "Ruslan and Liudmila" is a fantasy with the warrior bogatyr Ruslan rescuing the damsel Liudmila from from a dwarf magician Chernomor and his enchantess mistress. Glinka's themes are dressed in the greatest romantic tradition. Both programs start with the overture then progress to dances highlighted by various solo instuments. An excellent bargain all very sparkling in ambience and good translated liner notes are provided."
