Amazing performances, nice collection of pieces

"This disc combines three less-performed pieces by Richard Strauss, and this in itself is valuable. However, each performance easily rates among the best recorded. Boyd has long been my favorite oboist, mostly for his rich, round, supple tone. He is coupled here with an orchestra that plays this concerto with astounding precision and clarity. The cello sonata has very able playing by Rolland accompanied with Hamelin, and is highly musical, very sensitive, beautiful, and also precise. The recording captures a lot of the hall's ambience and warmth. Aarhus plays Macbeth admirably, and is recorded consistently, though the detail lacks somewhat.
In any event, this disc is worth having for the concerto, the sonata is an added bonus, and Macbeth doesn't disappoint."
