CD Reviews

A Solid Collection of Latin-Flavored Grooves.

"It's only appropriate that I would do a review of this album in July, the heart of summer. That's because "Nova Latino V.2" is a soundtrack to pool party bliss, offering sun-soaked grooves that bounce from bossa nova, Latin disco, and tasteful chillout. Looking to eliminate that lull at your cookout or patio get-together? This baby will do the trick. The collection is divided into two discs, and they both do the job well. The opening strokes of percussion that kick off disc 1 on "Close Your Eyes" by Bebel Gilberto start things off on a good note, while CR Project delivers a few moments of mellowed-out house on "Summer Thrill." Bossa nova freaks will nod their heads in agreement to US 3's "Get Out," as well as the French act Rinocerose's "Dead Can Dance." Disc 2 kicks things off on a discocentric note, with the notable standout "Besame Mucho" by Gadjo. The more mellow tunes include lovely numbers like "Brazilian Angel" by 2 Men Ahead with its crisp acoustic guitars, and Bossa Nostra are featured on the excellent "Chico Desperado." These are excellent CDs for quiet summer evenings or for long drives by the beach, and they provide a sense of calm without boring the listener to tears. I bought this release on a whim, and I have yet to regret it. A smart and tasteful collection."

"The essence of summer is holding a cool margarita and listening to Koop's 'Summer Sun' as the sun fades. This album is great for lounging as well as dancing. There are a few songs that don't fit, but none are so noticeably bad as to ruin the CDs. The first CD is a little more active while the second is a little more laid-back. Basically, if you enjoy Bossa Nova and don't mind the usual complications with compilations, then get this CD. P.S. the St. Germain song on here is not that great. I suspect it was added to give the compilation a higher profile."
