CD Reviews

An exotic, exceptional tribute album

(5 out of 5 stars)

"After many listenings over several months, this cd remains fresh. Nino ("the kid") Josele crosses over from flamenco to the jazz mainstream with apparent ease. He adapts some classic Bill Evans compositions (Peace Piece, Waltz for Debby, Turn Out the Stars) to his acoustic guitar; he also plays several ballads associated with Evans, and adds several surprises that I didn't know Evans had recorded (The Peacocks, The Dolphin, Hullo Bolinas, Minha). Marc Johnson is featured in duets on several tracks; Joe Lovano, Tom Harrell, and Jerry Gonzales are also heard to subtle effect. Estrella Morente is heard on "Minha," and Freddy Cole sings Leonard Cohen's "I Do It For Your Love." Extraordinary variety in the music; it's aesthetically unified but never monotonous."
Pure Magic !

Pleasant surprise

"I heard the first cut of this CD on KCCK-FM and was blown away by the great solo on Bill Evan's Peace Piece. On that alone, I bought the CD, usually a recipe for disaster. I can't tell you how many CDs I own that have The One Good Song. Not this one. At first I was a little bothered when I saw it wasn't all solo but not after listening; what a bunch of ringers he has assembled here!

He found Evan's last bassist, Marc Johnson, and another Evans favorite, Tom Harrell. It doesn't stop there; Freddie Cole does a cameo on the Paul Simon tune I Do It For You. Freddie is SO-O-O much more than "Nat's younger brother". He can take any song and sing it for YOU brah/sistah.Joe Lavano does a great Stan Getz on one of Stan's faves, The Peacocks. Besides Harrell, there's another nice trumpet solo from the guy who brought jazz to Sr. Josele, Jerry Gonzales, on Never Let Me Go. I should probably wait on writing this until I've listened a hundred times more but I don't think you'll be disappointed. Grind on some tapas, open a Rioja, light the candles...

P.S. As an audiophile, I can tell you the engineers did a GREAT job."
