CD Reviews

"Hanging Gardens" - a great masterpiece
Cameron Rochette | St Andrews, Scotland | 08/08/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I first heard this song on a radio network on a long haul flight a few years ago, and it was the perfect piece to listen to when you're sitting upright for ten hours in coach on an airplane. The soothing, evoking sounds produced by the interesting organs, quiet yet intense drum playing, and mysterious bass plucking was enough to make me buy this album after I got off the flight. It is great to fall asleep to, and this is what I would call "space - jazz", although I think the genre is jazz fusion. One critic described the hour-long piece to sound "as if the universe's plumbing is shuddering into gear". When the piano kicks in with the chord riffs, it is as if you're in a dream world with the tranquilizing percussion. What is great about this piece is that it so cleverly written; it is basically just a few bars of music that evolve into something unworldly, and it just keeps evolving into new sounds, and comes back to stuff played early in the song. Although the price may seem a bit high, it is definitely worth it, and I have listened to this album a million times. I am surprised that the CD still works properly! This is the only album I have of The Necks, and I don't really think I would need anymore. Definitely one of the greatest works I have ever listened to, especially in the jazz genre."
One Song CD?!?

"Yes, even though this Cd only sports one track, it is well worth the money. The Necks are a nice trio including keyboard, percussion and bass and have a sound that you've never heard. It is different, but catchy at the same time and I think MMW fans would eat this up."
