This Ain't the Album

(4 out of 5 stars)

"This album is MUSIC. It's not just hip hop, it's jazz, soul, spoken word, funk, even some drum & bass. Mikah 9 sings a lot on this album & it's pretty emotional at times. "American Nightmare" and "Work in Progress" are more than "just" hip hop albums, they are expressions of Mikah's artistic vision. The producer for most of this album, Josef Leimberg, is a jazz trumpeter apparently, and his music has a certain weight to it -- he's a real musician, not "just" a hip hop producer. It sounds like there's a lot of live musicians on this disc. Some of the songs sound a little too emotional to these ears. I was kind of laughing at the open emotion of "Protect the Children," but then I found myself singing it to myself for a couple days. My favorite song though is the most hardcore song, all rapping, no singing: "This Ain't the Song." I like Mikah-9's singing -- especially his scatting on "Free Energy" (Timetable) -- but the reason I listen to him is cause he's the greatest mc of all time. And that's why I can't give this album 5 stars: it doesn't have enough straight rapping. It has some very solid flows, but none of the mindblowing stuff we loved on Timetable or his Fellowship albums. Mikah, give us more songs like "First Things Last" and "Life or Death"! I wish he'd focus more on his rapping than his singing, but more power to him for following his artistic vision. All in all this is a very complete, solid album. It would be great for a chill party or gathering of friends, it's got something for everybody."
Another hit from the great one mikah 9
