Music from the Middle Eastern lute, the oud, has become especially popular in Australia through Joseph Tawadros and groups like Trio Joubran and Les Triaboliques. Ancient, mesmerising Iraqi rhythms based on Arabian magams conjure images of bazaars and mosques.
