CD Reviews

A Nice Collection Of Songs.

"I just recently bought this collection of hits from Munchener Freiheit. I'd been vaguely aware of them and wanted to hear a sample of what they were all about--also knowing that they sang in German interested me quite a bit. The first impression I got from hearing the opening keyboard line to the first song (Tausendmal Du), was that they reminded me a lot of late-eighties era Toto. A-ha also came to mind a bit too. Don't get me wrong though, these guys are quite original and not to mention good songwriters and musicians. I figure that most people in America aren't aware of this band since they are German and sing in their native tongue. They released an English language album here in the U.S. in the late-eighties, but it didn't do too well to my knowledge. This greatest hits collection is taken from a handful of albums they've made spanning over a few years. Munchener Freiheit isn't a very heavy aggressive band; they sound like contemporary soft rock. They use keyboards quite a bit, and the guitar playing seems to take a secondary role in their music usually. All of the songs are good, but the tunes I find to be exceptional would be "Tausendmal Du," "Mach Die Augen Zu," and "Tochter Der Venus." The three songs I just mentioned are very good songs that can't be beat. The backing vocals on "Tausendmal Du" are some of the best I've ever heard. "Mach Die Augen Zu" is quite progressive compared to the rest of the songs--it shows how experimental these guys can be and the song works very well; the instrumental part of the song is great. "Tochter Der Venus" is very captivating with it's keyboard playing and vocals/backing vocals. All of the songs on Simply the Best are good and better-than-good. For people that don't know German, don't let that be a turnoff--music is music whether you understand the language or not. I actually give this album 3.5 stars. Give Simply the Best a chance, it's a good collection of music. Munchener Freiheit is a good band."
