CD Reviews

Highly musical but overblown Mozart
Santa Fe Listener | Santa Fe, NM USA | 02/18/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I can't say why I love Karajan's Mozart on some occasions and almost cringe on others. This is sonically a fine remastering, but all three works seem a bit stomped on. Sym. 38 is especialy hurt by Karajan's Beethovenish weightiness in the first movement's slow introduction, which then makes a jack-rabbit takeoff into the allegro.

Sym. 39 fares somewhat better, but having been excited by the Berlin Phil's virtuosity in the Haffner and Linz symphonies (also reissued by EMI in their new "Karajan Collection"), I found the finale of the 39th a bit leaden. Strange, since all these symphonies wre recorded more or less at the same time in 1970. The filler is the lovely bassoon concerto, gorgeously played by the orchestra's first chair, Gunter Piesk, but it starts with an overblown, explosive introduction. Thank goodness Karajan pulls the reins in once the soloist enters. In all, not one of Karajan's best outings in big-band Mozart. Maybe I'll feel different in the morning."
