"I bought this at a music shop near my parents' house in 2000. Dad and I listened to it on balmy Spring afternoon in his garden over a few glasses of wine. We were both enchanted with this disc. Spring is nearly here again and my thoughts go back to my father who died five years ago this week.
This disc contains Lieder by Mozart and Haydn, sung by Anne Sofie von Otter, accompanied by Melvyn Tan on the fortepiano. The music ranges from folk songs to much more sophisticated music we normally associate with the 19th century Lieder of Schumann and Schubert. Haydn's works are particularly beautiful and most of the songs he composed music to are in the English language. "The Mermaid's Song" and "My mother bids me bind my hair" are two of my favourites.
This is an excellent disc of 18th century music from two performers who really "know their stuff".
It is a crying shame that it is currently unavailable. If you can get a hold of a copy, I promise you won't be disappointed. I can think of nothing better than sitting under the stars on a balmy Summer evening with a glass of merlot and this CD on my portable player."
