Synopsis

Amazon.com essential recording
Erich Kleiber's magically sympathetic, spirited, and incandescent recording of what may be Mozart's most perfect opera has long been the catalog benchmark for this work. Unfortunately, the full recording has again gone out of print; until Universal/Polygram decides to reissue, this compilation of highlights will have to do. But it makes an excellent introduction to the opera, especially for anyone setting out to discover the miraculous, myriad ways in which Mozart could translate emotions and dramatic complications into music. Just listen to the resonance of arias such as "Porgi amor" and "Dove sono" and you'll get a flavor of Mozart's intuitive grasp and portrayal of human nature: these are the qualities that have secured his position as the Shakespeare of opera (his own favorite genre for which to compose, in fact). The cast represents several voices from one of opera's golden ages of singing. Kleiber molds and shapes the long lines of Mozart's lyricism with unfailing mastery, and--as you can readily hear in the overture--infectiously sets the composer's irrepressible high spirits loose in a sparkling but never unbridled account. --Thomas May

CD Reviews

Excellent Conducting and a Lively Figaro
Mateo | Mexico City | 08/11/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you do not have an opera CD collector's budget, and you are trying to determine which recording of Figaro to invest in, you would do well to purchase this recording of highlights. Kleiber's conducting is perfectly delightful, and represents the best extant recorded conducting of Figaro by far, leaving Giulini sounding almost pedestrian and just about everyone else plodding. And Siepi is completely engaged, incredibly fun to listen to, and certainly among the best Figaros. If the historic recording quality and comparatively weaker supporting singers do not bother you, then you may rest assured that the full opera, which costs three times as much as this disc, is worth the investment."
Excellent historical recording - and a wonderful introductio
Abel | Hong Kong | 08/03/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I've already reviewed the full set of this wonderful opera recording by Erich Kleiber.

I am purchasing this High Light set for my friend who is beginning to feel interested in opera.

Siepi - Gueden - Della Casa - Danco, even Poell. All great in their respective roles. The conducting couldn't be bettered. Even Carlos Kleiber admitted that his dad's version of Le Nozze is unsurpassable."
Greatest Bass this Century
Abel | 05/02/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"If you buy this CD, do it because of Cesare Siepi. His gorgeous basso voice is perfect for the role of Figaro. He is clear and emotive at all times--and besides what the person above me said: Figaro is a bass role; he doesn't sing "thickly". That being said, the rest of the recording is weak, with no one even coming close to Siepi, or any other stars for that matter. A great buy for fans of Cesare Siepi!"
