CD Reviews

An oldie but this is super!
Geoffrey P. Smith | ATLANTA, GA USA | 07/13/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"There is an energy here from the orchestra and ensemble that is irresistible! The female protagonists are beautifully balanced and the men full of brio. The differences of character of the three female leads implied by Mozart's music are all brought out by these sopranos distinctly. Zerlina is a stand out here as the country girl who falls for the wiles of our anti-hero. This is my favorite opera of Mozart's and perhaps my all time favorite. Of the four versions I own this recent purchase is in heavy rotation. The second act music is darker, and forebodes the fall of our hero magnificently. Ensembles, arias and recitatives match Mozart's wondrous music and the Don's tumble into hell cooks up some heat. Recommended!"
Possibly the most solid Don out there.

"While I won't go so far as to say this is my favorite version of this opera, I will say that this is the only one I know of with NO weak links. Everyone is good or great. I own seven or eight productions and each has one or two singers or the conductors who don't perform up to par and here Krips' tempi are perfect if not too subtle. Bohme, Della Casa, Danco, and Corena sing very well. Gueden,Dermota and Berry are exquisite and Siepi is the best Don ever period.

This is a good companion to the DVD version with Furtwangler conducting and some different parts including Elisabeth Grummer's all-time great Donna Anna. I can't ever get enough of this opera but if you have to buy only one this would be an intelligent choice."
Great on LP

"I have this performance on LP records(in mono). It is my favorite performance of this opera. I have turned it into CD's to listen to in my car. I can't say enough good about it."
