The best "Abduction" I've heard
10/06/1998
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is my favorite among the presently-available recordings of "Entfuhrung". All of the performers give more-than-adequate readings of their roles, and the pure, beautiful voices complement Mozart's music nearly ideally. The tempos are generally well-chosen and lively. Kurt Streit's Belmonte is a real pleasure to hear, if a shade cool in emotion; the Pedrillo of Robert Gambill is no less enjoyable. Szmytka comes as close to an ideal Blonde as I've heard, and Missenhardt's Osmin is agilely sung--and suitably cantankerous. Cheryl Studer, as Konstanze, is not quite on top form, but she gives a very good performance nonetheless. There is a slight mechanical quality to some of her coloratura, but this is a minor point in light of the expressive portrayal she gives; "Traurigkeit" is very moving and intense. "Martern aller Arten" is nicely flashy, and the duet with Belmonte is beautiful. All in all, a very attractive performance."
