CD Reviews

Mouvements Perpetuels
Peter | Palo Alto, California | 02/11/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a fine example of viruosic musicianship from all the collaborators, Karen Van Dyke on flute, Paul Binkley on guitar, and Dahna Rudin on cello. The balance between the instruments is particularly good on this recording. I have been disappointed by other recordings of flute and guitar music where the flute overwhelms the guitar. It is an interesting combination of lesser known composers and pieces, such as the Giuliani serenade, and more commonly performed repertoire arranged for flute and guitar and cello, such as Bach's E Minor sonata, Rachmaninoff's Vocalise, Borne's Carmen Fantasie, and the marvelously simple sounding Poulenc Mouvements Perpetuels.I particularly liked the technical accuracy of rhythm and articulation in the Giuliani serenade. The cello is allowed to shine in the E Minor Sonata, and the tone colors that the alto flute brings to the Rachmaninoff Vocalise are memorable."
