She was the only challenger to the vocal acrobatics of "Yma Sumac" and, unlike that jersey devil, she chose material that was accessible to an audience and not merely a showpiece for her instrument. True, this set doesn't reflect her best work, but check out almost anything else...earlier is better. "Simply Eloquent" is sublime. Tasteful, and exemplary of a true musician's sense of voice as a jazz instrument, as part of an ensemble. Also "A taste of honey" (extremely hard to find) which shows off the amazing range and facility of this remarkable woman. She IS a jazz singer. period.
