Spirit Dancing
Lee Armstrong | Winterville, NC United States | 07/05/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Liner notes relate that Mimi lived in a recycled circus wagon in the Missouri countryside when this CD was recorded in 1996. I enjoy songwriters whose personality shines through in their writing; and Mimi is one of these. "Power Rises" opens the set with energy and what I can best as a kind of yodeling chorus. Mimi's voice will not earn the title of Ms. Perfect Pitch as on the humorous "Cabin Fever." Yet, her songs are unique and very easy to listen to. She resembles Annie Gallup as on her CD Swerve with her sense of humor or Amy Rigby's Til the Wheels Fall Off with her irreverence. The number of unusual instruments hint at the imagination used on the disc such as rain stick, toy piano, shells, baby rattle, ocean drum, vibraslap and leg. "Keep It Free" has a lovely melody, "Rain falls all around my heart, asking for this time, keep it free." Complete with thunder sound effects, Baczewska (Baa/chef/ska) sings a memory song for the dearly departed. "She's a Keeper" with its peppy rhythms is a woman to woman love song, "It was a daring move, there are no certainties; This loving sets my heart romancing; And no one need approve of what she means to me; This loving sets my spirit dancing." "Seeds of Hope" is a charming track with its brisk melody and child-like love of nature. "Furious" bounces to a beatnik beat and appears to be a woman to woman breakup talk-song, "The wind still blows every night; I took a chance with you; What do you want with me? I'm not a stupid girl." "The Love That Matters" is a strong track, "The fire has been ignited and it nourishes the spark of a soul that used to shatter." Mimi Baczewska's independent CD is filled with originality and imagination. Enjoy!"
