Ranks with the greatest performances of these concertos

"Roll gives contrasting interpretations of these concertos. The second was composed before the first but was published later. Roll's performance reflects the high spirits of the young Beethoven who was introducing himself to the Viennese musical public as a composer of genius and a brilliant piano virtusoso. Roll's performance cannot be bettered. He understands the spirit of the young Beethoven and gives a remarkable performance that reflects the music and, if possible, the young Beethoven performing for the Viennese public. With the third we are in a different world. This concerto of the middle period reflects the mightly Beethoven with a theme redolent of the great Mozart C minor Concerto but with a different dimension-The granduer of the first movement, the gorgeous majestic organ like sounds of the second movement and the brilliant wit and virtuoso writing of the finale Rondo unite in a truly remarkable composition that is unique among Beethoven's output. Roll captures the granduer, seriousness and lyricism of the opening movement, the majesty and espressiveness of the slow movement, and the hi-jinks and wit of the finale with astounding technique, insight, contrast, and blazing virtuosity-This performance is unexcelled. Howard Shelley, another British pianist, is the remarkable conductor who not only accompanies but enhances these interpretations as an equal partner. The recording is first rate as is the playing of the orchestra. Both concerto performances belong in the collection of every serious music lover. At the low price --you cannot get a better bargain."
