CD Reviews

Essential to the start of your 'Deth experience...
Peter Azello | San Jose, California | 04/12/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Greetings, shopper. It seems you have stumbled upon this album titled "Greatest Hits: Back To The Start" by this band called "Megadeth". Maybe you have heard of them in your life. Maybe you haven't. Maybe you are a metal fan, but are just looking to get into this band. Well, look no further. Because this little band is "The Band" to listen to. Your opinion on music, in general, will change with the first time you listen to these guys. Maybe your life will be forever changed. Hell, you have come across a man named Dave Mustaine, probably one of the most revered guitarists in metal, and probably one of the most unique voices you will ever hear.

To the point. Megadeth is the best band from the 1980's and the early 1990's. Out of the "Big Four Of Thrash", Megadeth takes number One! You mean better then Slayer? Yep! Better then Anthrax? For sure! And you mean better then the ever-so-greatly-overrated and sellouts that haven't made something good since 1988? You bet. Megadeth may be underrated, and Mustaine underappreciated, but that doesn't take away from the pure ownage they unload into their music. They have the perfect formula: great guitars, killer bass, drums that would kick Lars Ulrich's behind any day, snarling vocals, and scathing political lyrics and a strange sense of sarcasm and humor in them. Yes, since the beginning this band has done it all.

If you do not own any Megadeth albums, then click the "Add To Cart" button at the top hand of your screen right now. Then choose One-Day Shipping at the checkout screen. It is that essential to have now. This compilation is the best one to have. Not only does it have 17 stand-out tracks from Megadeth's entire career up to 2004, but each track has been remixed and remastered by Dave Mustaine himself (just like Megadeth's entire back catalogue). Even though some of the vocals have been re-recorded and butchered, you will never know! Which is a relief.

So, onto the album. The minute you put this CD in, you hear probably the greatest metal song of all-time, "Holy Wars...The Punishment Due". This 6-minute guitar composition is pure ownage. The solos are unbelievable, with an amazing outro. This song made me a metalhead, and maybe it can make you one, too! The next song is "In My Darkest Hour", a song dedicated to Metallica's bassist Cliff Burton. Another 6-minute masterpiece. Next is probably Megadeth's most famous song, "Peace Sells". This is my favorite Megadeth song, and what a bass line in the beginning. "Sweating Bullets" remains a fan favorite, as we see Mustaine's sarcasm here. The next four tracks, "Angry Again", "A Tout Le Monde", "Trust" and "Kill The King" are perfect examples of good songs. "Kill The King" and "Angry Again" are two rarities. "Trust" is descent, and "A Tout Le Monde", a song about suicide, is the best song from their "Youthanasia" album.

The second half of the CD is just as good as the first. "Symphony Of Destruction" is Megadeth's most commercially successive song, and even though it isn't as complex as their other stuff, it is still a great song nontheless. "Mechanix" is the early version of Metallica's "The Four Horsemen", when Dave Mustaine was them in the early 80's. It annihilates the Metallica version. And it's about Mustaine fantasizing about nailing the rich women when he worked at a mechanic (hence the song name). "Train Of Consequences" is next, and another good song at that.

The next two songs define what heavy metal is about. "Wake Up Dead" is a classic 'Deth song. It is apart of their famous 1986 thrash masterpiece "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?". The next song, "Hangar 18", has FIVE solos! All of them are amazing, and really is better then Metallica has ever done. "Dread And The Fugitive Mind" is another rarity. I actually love this song. The next three tracks "Skin O' My Teeth", "She-Wolf" and "Prince Of Darkness" are not my favorite songs, but they are still good. And that's the compilation for you. The perfect one to get you started on one of the best metal bands of all-time!"

"First, i'd like to say I wasnt a huge metal fan before Megadeth. I was introduced to Megadeth through a very special person I once knew and it changed my life. Mustaine says everything that im thinking and does it with a passion and agression unlike anyone in metal. Every song is brilliant and prophetic. This is a must have for any Megadeth Fan. The reason I say this is because the songs sound better than ever and this band has really aged well.

This compilation is very well put-together. It comes in a hardback book with a glossy cover. The inside also contains a booklet with some cool artwork. Scenes of war, helicopters, pictures of the band, soldiers and some interesting quotes. This is missing some great classics but this compilation are the fans favorites, taken from a poll on Megadeth.com. I noticed they put Prince Of Darkness on this CD. I didnt think Prince Of Darkness was one of their greatest hits. I first heard Prince of Darkness on The Risk Album. That was one of my least favorite songs on the whole album. Here it is the last track on the CD and i was very suprised. I really didnt like the song before, now I love it. It seems to have a slightly harder edge to it this time. Mustaine must have re-vamped the song and now its great and a good closing song to the album.

Overall, its a great CD and DVD, to me the extra material is worth the money. One day i'd even like to see a Megadeth box set that spans their whole career, but this is great for now. Megadeth is definitely the best heavy metal band of all time and any fan should own this album because they sound better than ever. Highly Recommended."
Might be from 2 to 4.5 stars (but 4.5 for me)

"The 2nd official compilation of the great thrash-speed band, exclude box set and those stuffs in Japan.

As I mentioned above, this album deserve 2 to 4.5 stars (but 4.5 for me) because of the reasons below.

I'll give 2 stars, if you own the "Capitol Punishment: The Megadeth Years" already or you have almost (or all) of their albums, this compilation may not suit for you. The songs we have here in this CD is a little bit different than those songs in the Capitol Punishment. The songs which were not in the last compilation are Angry Again (from Last Action Hero OST), Skin O' My Teeth (How did they forget to add this song into the last compilation?),Machanix[it's Remix],Prince Of Darkness and She-Wolf.

I'll give 3-3.5 stars if you are the one who is the fan of this super-group and you want a CD loaded with many great songs. This one is the good choice for you (if you don't have the Capitol Punishment). This CD and the last compilation (Capitol Punishment) has its own pros-cons. This one has songs from the different eras of Megadeth and has more songs. The Capitol Punishment has unreleased tracks. I think this album should be released in 2 CDs set (+1 DVD for limited edition), I don't know why the new compilation doesn't have the complete hits. Many great songs are missing!!! This is why I gave 3-3.5 to this album.

I'll give 4-4.5 stars if you are new to Megadeth. This one is the really good choice to start. AND if you are the real fans, this limited edition is for you. As we know, there is a DVD (Fillmore, CO 2000) come with this set. For my opinion, the best Megadeth (best music) is the Marty Friedman's era. Chris Poland is also great but I think the beautiful harmony and finger lines of Friedman can get along with Mustaine's powerful riffs and aggressive melody perfectly. This is the recipe of the Masterpiece. The beautiful notes with the smell of oriental of Friedman run smoothly with the powerful note of Mustaine. It's not easy to put the opposite things together, but they did it and did it perfectly. This DVD is the reason why I give this album 4.5 stars. It's not easy to see Megadeth's live with Marty Friedman. The concert clips in this DVD can make you happy and worth to see if you want to see the Megadeth with Marty Friedman. Anyway, 0.5 star is deducted as the movie quality is not in the DVD quality (but better than any bootleg DVD). 7 Songs, 1 MV and 1 promo clip may be not enough. Anyway, I'm waiting their new DVD. Judge by yourself, for me, these rare concert clips with Friedman is amazing. 4.5 Stars for this limited edition. Thank you for reading."
