CLASSIC TOOTS
Jasper | New England | 09/11/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is an excellent release by Trojan records featuring a disc jam-packed with one of Toots & The Maytals most essential LPs, "Monkey Man," and a number of absolutely top-shelf singles, including a couple of earlier takes on some "Monkey Man" tracks. This music is just as good and vital as "Funky Kingston," which is probably Toot's best seller, and is from the same era. The sound mastering is beautiful, bright and clear, and the music, again, is beyond reproach. Essential Toots with a CD filled to the brim for maximum value. You can't ask for more. This is a no-brainer."
Toots- the unsung King of Reggae

"Bob Marley was more famous.

Jimmy Cliff sold more records.

Line up all the Jamaican musicians and none can carry Toot's guitar case.

There has never been a better, more soulful, funky, ethereal reggae singer than Toots and this is one of the best reggae albums of all time.

Indeed,it's one of the best albums, period, across all genres. That's why the Clash picked up on Toots and turned "Pressure Drop" into a cross-genre punk hit. So much of contemporary punk, ska and other modern music owes a huge debt to the influential Toots. Just listen to Manu Chao today and see what an impact Toots had-- and this was his defining, seminal record.

This kicks!!!

If this one don't grab you,no island music will- not ska, not irie and not reggae."
