CD Reviews

Maysa, Maysa, Maysa! Thank You For Giving Us Some 'Sweet Cl
Charles L. Hubbert | Milwaukee, WI | 05/08/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I must disclose upfront that I as well as my wife are both HUGE Maysa fans...so this review is probably going to be a little bias (hey, at least I admit it...unlike some reviewers!) Nevertheless, Maysa has decided to expand into doing other types of albums. Such is the case with Sweet Classic Soul, a collection of carefully crafted remakes of some of the best songs of the last half century. A lot of artists don't even attempt to try their hands at doing covers, while other artists who have no business even thinking about doing one fail miserably. Being the strong vocalist that she is, Maysa pulls off these songs without breaking a sweat.

Her cover of "Wishing On A Star" is just as strong as Rose Royce's original version. "Don't Say Goodnight" is a good spin on an old classic. Such is the case for her rendition of Stevie Wonder's "All I Do." The fact that Maysa would even cover "Love Won't Let Me Wait" by Major Harris is truly wonderful. "Come Go With Me" is not as strong as Teddy Pendergrass' original, but it still passes as a decent shot at doing such an timeless classic. The same can be said for the Stylistics' "Betcha By Golly Wow," a cover that was done better by Prince some years ago. She does belt out a pretty good version of "Playing Your Game, Baby" by Barry White. She closes out the album with her take on "Love Comes Easy," "Any Love" (not Luther's version), and "The First Time (Ever I Saw Your Face)."

Even though she stuck to some older material, Maysa does an exceptional job on most of the song choices that she did make. Hopefully with the release of Sweet Classic Soul, Maysa will do other specialized collections like a live album or even a duets disc.

"So weet", So needed...

"I have to say that after waiting anxiously for the release of this albulm, I am more than gratified. The wait was well worth it. Maysa has a superb voice. Seeing her "LIVE" is even better. This girl has not gotten the recognition she deserves. If you are into smotth jazz and silky voices, this one is the one for you. After a long day at work, you can put this CD in and let her take you to a serene place. Well worth the buy. BTW check out some of her previous releases as well. My fav is "All my life" from her and off course her contribution to the Brittish Jazz band Incognito.

This is a must in your collection."
Amazing Vocal Talent...Great CD...you need to buy this CD

"I have been a big Maysa fan since the first day I heard her singing with Incognito years ago, and this CD just really brings out her pure vocal skills and talent. Maysa has the kind of voice that just sends chills down your spine as soon as she starts singing...it just gets right to your inner soul. All of these songs are great songs, and Maysa adds her own little style and touch to make each song her own, eventhough many of them have been remade by many other singers in the past. If you are a fan of great R&B/Soul Music and want to hear an amazing vocal talent, this CD is a great addition to any collection."
