CD Reviews

Seminal Australian Classic
Nicole Stein | Melbourne, Australia | 04/17/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This seminal Australian album is all the more amazing for the fact that the group existed for less than six months.

Witty, noisy and catchy; the mostly original songs (highlights include Elvis Superstar, Motorbiker and Two Storey Man) plus one inspired Scientists cover, are played with a live intensity leaving you wishing you had been in Sydney at the end of the eighties to have heard them play.

The fuzzy overdriven bass and whirling crunchy guitars drone over simple hypnotic drum beats over which the vocals swoop in, at once purring taunting and defiant, but never obnoxious or snotty. This is the band you wish you were.

If you are a fan of swamp rock, noise pop or riot grrrl punk you need this album in your collection. All roads lead to Matrimony."
Hidden Gem
Gerard Mulligan | Nutley, NJ USA | 07/31/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"If you like Mecca Normal, this is up yr alley. I wonder how such a wonderful band could've slipped through the fingers of...everyone. Were they not controversial enough (you wouldn't think so with songs like track 5)? Were they not different enough sounding (hardly!)? Whatever it is, don't let it stop you. This album has very Jean Smith-esque vocals, but with the riotgrrl's mocking tone. Sybilla's vocals shreik, mock, and scream. The backround is grinding at times, or very simple at others. The more I listen to it...it sounds a tad like Exene from X...Whatever. Buy this. I'm really very sad that the band has broken up and this is all they have available. Its a shame. Don't hesitate, buy this. Buy this. Especially if you like Bratmobile and Bikini Kill, being they both were influenced by Matrimony. Some Matrimony songs just have a bass and finger snapping in the backround. Gorgeous! A rare find."
