CD Reviews

Fabulous choral works!
09/20/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Mozart's Great Mass, the famous Requiem, and all of the other pieces on this set are just fantastic. The first few discs overflow with invention and joy. Such music! The great K. 427 is one of the best versions I've ever heard (phew!), and the first half of the Requiem---the part written primarily by Mozart---is on the money. Maybe Mozart preferred writing opera, but it sure doesn't show here. Excelsior!"
Mass that isn't boring
"Worship Mozart!" | Grand Canyon State | 02/20/2005

"Only the inimitable Mozart could compose mass music that isn't boring and overflows with as much sentiment as his operatic works. Haven't really got to the Requiem yet as I've been enamoured by the missae but if the Requiem is the same version as an independent Requiem CD by Philips/Marriner/ASMF, then it is the best version I've heard. Only knowing that Mozart himself did not write the complete Requiem diminishes my enjoyment of it. Hint: if you like the Mass in C Minor in this set, get the 'Oratorios, Cantatas and Masonic Music', also part of the Philips 'Complete Mozart Edition' set. In that, the cantata 'Davide Penitante' is similar to the Mass in C Minor but, to me, is better peformed (stronger soprano voices). In any case, this box set is highly coveted by the 'Complete Mozart Edition' collector and now I can see why!"
Its a miracle that Philips

"Re-released this set. Philips is notorious for deleting and not re-issuing great recordings. If you look at the other listing its the same as this one + you get a few more cds with organ works.

This is the definitive Mozart mass edition as far as the minor masses go. Essential set for all Mozartians.

Kegel here is at top form.

See new relese of Feb, 2006 for my other comments.
