CD Reviews

3.5 stars - a solid Christian melodic rock album
Justin Gaines | Northern Virginia | 05/19/2009
(3 out of 5 stars)

"After a series of label complications, Massachusetts-based Christian rockers Mass finally released their major label debut Voices in the Night in 1989. The band caught the attention of Stryper frontman Michael Sweet, who helped them get signed to Enigma records and also produced Voices in the Night.

I suppose comparing Mass to Stryper is taking the easy way out, but the comparison definitely fits. Both bands have a similar melodic rocking sound, a shared faith, and a higher-octave vocal style. Mass never really brings the metal the way Stryper could (when they wanted to), and it's obvious they didn't have the same production budget. The band's songwriting wasn't quite as strong either, despite some very effective melodic rockers like "Carry Your Heart" and "Reach for the Sky".

Mass is obviously a Christian rock band, though they never really seemed to warm to that label. Their lyrics are positive in nature, but aren't overtly religious, so they won't alienate those who just came to rock and aren't interested in a Sunday sermon.

Fans of Stryper in particular, as well as the era's less party-obsessed melodic rock bands (TNT, White Lion, etc.) should enjoy Mass's sound. If you're looking for high energy, L.A. style hair metal though, you won't find it here."
FANS OF STRYPER/TNT WILL LOVE THIS ALBUM

"I am suprised there is no reviews for this yet as I thought many Stryper fans would have already got on board to this great cd and there would be lot's of reviews already.

If you are a fan of Stryper,TNT,or White Lion then you will really like this cd. It was produced by Michael Sweet of Stryper and on the same label as them at the time. I would say this is a very polished album that sounds much like Stryper's "In God We Trust" album. The songs are really great melodic metal. Features the title track "Voices In The Night" which is a strong opener for the album. "Nine Tonight" has a catchy chorus that you will have in your head in no time. "Reach For The Sky" is a very good track with a great pre-chorus set up. With other songs like "Follow Me" and the ballad "Call Out Your Name" this is one cd that belongs in your collection.

You will ask yourself why you waited so long to purchase this cd. It should go right there beside your Stryper "In God We Trust" cd and TNT's "Intuition." It is worth the out of print price you will most likely pay. I hope you give this a try and see what you have been missing."
