"Martin Newell is one of those artists who creates selfish fans. He's so good, you seethe against the ignorant masses that continue to ignore him. Perversely, however, your "inner music snob" secretly delights in the fact that the ignorant masses haven't yet despoiled your "personal" discovery. After about 20 years and about as many lo-fi albums, however, you start to feel guilty...doesn't this poor guy at least deserve a decent producer?! A studio with at least 16 tracks for once? Newell's latest release, "The Spirit Cage", full of his usual wonderful tunesmithing but sonically flat, cries out for a filthy rich patron. (Paul Allen, are you listening? Have a heart!) Be the first on your block to have a jangly Beatles/Ray Davies influenced genius in your back yard! (Completely house trained, only requires to be fed tea and biscuits three times a day.) In the meantime, pick up a copy of "Spirit Cage". In fact...buy two-hand one to a stranger! Cheers!"
