CD Reviews

An instant soul classic for the new millennium.

"THANK GOD for young artists like Martha Redbone! You know, it's a shame she doesn't get much exposure (on account of being an independent artist for that matter) because this sophomore set of hers contains the sort of material that should be getting NON-STOP airplay on every FM radio station around! Utilizing a crack live band this time out, the overall vibe of Skintalk is at once inspired, intelligent, and extremely heartfelt. You can play this for people of all ages and backgrounds without having to worry about offending anybody whatsoever. This is also the kind of work that demands repeated listening, for the lyrical content throughout (mostly provided by Martha herself) tackles a wide range of thoughts and emotions most people can relate to, particularly in today's trying times. And last, but not least, one can't ignore the sheer power and beauty of Redbone's voice. Funny that she originally didn't consider herself a singer, but I'm glad she got over that notion quickly. She absolutely sounds sensational here, often evoking many R&B/Soul greats of the past like Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, and Anita Baker for example.

It's already been deemed a given that mainstream media will continue to blatantly ignore true artistic quality like what is featured on this album, but do take my word for it: IT'S ONE YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO BE WITHOUT!!!!!!

"The follow up to "Home of the Brave", this incredible artist has hit another home run! This is a very soulful CD with a great deal of variety. Staying true to her native and african american roots, Martha Redbone shows why she is fantastic songwriter and musician. There is also some excellent guitar work on this treat. I found this CD to more in line with traditional R&B than her previous CD, which just shows her amazing versatility. There's something on the CD for everyone. I would suggest one sit back relax and spend some quality time with this quality CD. It's proof positive that music is still alive and some of its best performers are unknown or don't receive ample recognition. that's really too bad because folks are going to miss out on some exceptional talent, and Martha Redbone is just that; an EXCEPTIONAL TALENT!"

"WOW!!!! This is a stunning collection of songs that I only discovered by chance - once again the album was recommended as I was searching for another artist. I took it to work and found the music so entrancing that I listened to the disc over & over.

It's a terrific mix of soul, funk, r&b with touches of her Native American heritage - I could really feel HER soul shining through on each song. The fact that she is a terrific singer coupled with her strong songwriting ability and the musical arrangements on each track made this a collection that I rated as close to perfection.

Every song has something to offer but the ones that really stood out to me and I find myself pressing "repeat" on are:

JUST BECAUSE - Martha's singing reminds me of Phyllis Hyman on this track

SKIN - the arrangement is very Earth, Wind & Fire-esque

MEDICINE MAN - very interesting track that displays elements of a Native American chant

FUTURE STREET - exqusite arrangement

Like the other reviewers I hope that this industry begins to recognize talent and stops focusing on "image" over true substance because too many truly talented artists are falling through cracks. I'd highly recommend all lovers of music giving this artist a chance, this disc is exceptional!
