CD Reviews

Mark is a winner

"Having heard a demo of his from Gay Pride Seattle '99, I rushed right out and got 2 of the CD's. One for my private listening pleasure and one for the jukebox in the tavern. Safe to say, one of Mark's songs plays at least twice an hour. Hurry up with the second set Mark ... your fans are waiting."
The Real Brokeback Mountain music
Tim Brough | Springfield, PA United States | 01/15/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Having been a fan of Mark Weigle for awhile now, I was struck while viewing the movie "Brokeback Mountain" as to what a missed opportunity the filmmakers wasted by not including some of Mark's songs in the soundtrack. In particular, the songs from "The Truth Is:" "The Two Cowboy Waltz" and the heartbreaking "One Less Dancer," about the passing of a two-stepper. Mark's voice rings with pure country emotion (he also frequently reminds me of Dan Fogelberg or Jackson Browne on the pop side), and his songs convey not just a gay sensibility but a universal recognition about love, longing, and loss. In other words, everything Jack and Ennis were feeling as "Brokeback Mountain" wound its way to its Shakespearean tragic end.

But that is not the only reason to pick up on Mark's great CDs. You'll also discover the great fun he has in a song like "If You Grew Up Here" and the tenderness of "I Confess." While I find it hard to recommend any of Mark's music above any others (and his 2005 "Soul Sex: Wrestling the Angel/Versatile" double CD set is among my favorites for the year list), I would recommend that you purchase "The Truth Is" and "All That Matters" together and listen to them as a pair. If you read the titles together as one sentence, you'll understand that there was thought behind the sentiment running through the two discs' emotional core.

Mark Weigle is an undiscovered treasure who deserves your eartime, and with any luck (or justice) some prime time."
Excellent storytelling and beautiful sound

"I actually grew up with Mark. I heard him first play this music back in 1998, and immediately feel in love with the sound and the stories he portrayed. "If You Grew Up There" is all about our home state - and believe me in captures the spirit. His love songs are truly inspiring - if you don't have it yet - go and purchase it!"
