By now, the world ought to know that Mark Selby was the songsmithing genius behind Kenny Wayne Shepherd's massive hit "Blue on Black." Clearly, someone figured out that there's probably more where that came from; hence, Selby's own debut, on the venerable Vanguard label. Indeed, this album contains all the necessary ingredients: blues-rock riffs chock-full of crunchy goodness; workmanlike lyrics with just enough wit to be clever, but not so much as to sound pretentious; and a backing band that sounds as if they're having the time of their lives. If there's a failing here, it's that the album is occasionally a little too glib, and when Selby tries on a ballad or a bit of acoustic blues, it doesn't quite come through. When he rocks out, though, he's capable of transporting the listener to a sweaty blues bar at 2 a.m., full of hard-core partyers making a mockery of last call. Selby's greatest asset is that he has the same unpretentious charm that's made Tommy Castro so well-known. May it serve Selby equally well, if only because the world does need more songs like "Kink in the Chain" and "Smoked." --Genevieve Williams

CD Reviews

Great Guitarist

"I own this cd along with many KWS cd's, and their may not be many comparisons, but indeed they are both great performers. Seen Mark Selby live and he was great. Everyone has there own opinion when it comes to music, so my advice is to listen to it for yourself and then decide, don't go by what others have to say."
Awesome

"Short & to the point, Mark Selby has the musical & lyrical talent & charisma on stage of John Hiatt. Buy both CD's, you'll keep them both in rotation & want to tell everyone you know about musics best kept secret."
I already smell da rain'..more storms comin'....

"...curiously, the last track on said album,..all of three minutes long, performed on dobro guitar, superbly understated,.. AND not at all indicative of the content on this toe tappin' BURNER of a disc!! The progenitor of Kenny Wayne Shephard's success...NO SURPRISE HERE! "ITS' like Mercury"....one of the HOT cuts reminiscent of a Stones standard..but with a GENUINE gutsy blues import! In short,...gentle folk,..this album KICKS!! Guaranteed..to delight the ears and create electric blues ROCK Nirvana! "You got it good,..it don't get better!" Money very well spent on this freshman outing......YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED!!!!"
