CD Reviews

At her worst...
C. Pacheco | 11/03/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I bought this to hear Maria's final recital. I must say that of course it does not measure up to her earlier recordings, when she was in her prime...but the magnificent qualities that made her "La Divina" are still there. She transmits such emotion, such beauty, such drama, such magic with her voice that even singing only 5 notes she would still be the best. Yes, there is a wobble, quite pronounced in some parts, but the intonation is not bad at all. Her middle and low registers however are intact and she sings with the same full bodied sound so characteristic of this greatest of them all.

It is Maria at her worst, but her worst is better than most people's best. As Pauline Viardot once said in reference to Giuditta Pasta's last recital: "It is like Leonardo Da Vinci's Last Supper. The ruins of an art work, but the ruins of the greatest art work that ever existed"."
