Synopsis

Album Description
Anyone drawn to African and World Music will be entranced by Mamadou and Vanessa Sidibe's new CD, Nacama ("Destiny"). Nacama captivates with English and Bambara lyrics, fine solos, transcendent duets, and instruementals synonymous with Mamadou's reverently fresh approach to the music of his West African heritage. Twenty five years ago Mamadou played a groundbreaking role in transforming music of his Wassalou Region in Mali, from its origins in hunters' sacred melodies--played on six string dosn'goni (hunters harps)--to a music of love, politics and daily life. Mamadou expanded the instrument's range with two extra strings, creating the popular kameln'goni. Mamadou, with artists Coumba Sidibe, Oumou Sangare, and Ramatu Diakite, spread the new sounds through Europe, Africa and the United States. Now Mamadou effortlessly blends Wassalou melodies with American Blues in this unique collaboration with his wife, Vanessa Sidibe. Vanessa, an accomplished Afro-Cuban and Salsa musician, has performed, recorded, and taught in the San Francisco Area for over fifteen years. Solo and in tandem with Mamadou, she brings earthy depth and ethereal sensuality to all her vocals. With their first joint CD, the Sidibes merge two languages, two cultures, and two musical threads. In keeping with Mali's oral culture, the pieces tell stories and impart traditional wisdom. "Fula," a history of the Fulani people, has an irresistibe dance rhythm. " A Long Time Ago," with it's Bambara chorus, fragments of memory recall lost love. In th Blues-influenced "Follow You," the singers' voices run alongside each other, then join and separate. The instrumental, "N'goni Cadie," appropriately translates to "Sweet N'goni". The peaceful "Nemasilon" ("I Am Not Afraid",) completes the CD with simple instrumentation and words that reassure, "honesty brings a good life." All in all, Nacama leads its listeners through a brilliant cultural and musical journey

"Always on the prowl for inspiring World Beats, I just got the Mamadou and Vanessa CD and it's AMAZING!! My taste in music is very eclectic to say the least (e.g. Toufic Farroukh, Ozomatli, Buena Vista Social Club, etc.). This CD has a wonderful mix of native beats, soothing melodies, and silky vocals--all of which combined aid in transporting you instantly from the exhausting pace of every day life to a place rich in tranquility!"
A Must for World Music Lovers

"African and world music fans should celebrate; this is one of the finest recordings to come out in a long time. With the ground-breaking mix of traditional Mali instrumentals and blues based vocals this CD soars. After a long day this is now my favorite music for unwinding as well as renewing my energies. On the top of my list, "A Long Time Ago", bluesy jazz vocals are accompanied perfectly with traditional African rhythms. And on another favorite, the serene "Nemalon", Mamadou's hypnotic melodies remind me of gentle raindrops falling and the haunting vocals by Vanessa effortlessly blend in. These amazing musicians will give you a refreshing taste of new world music. If you're looking for something that can restore your sense of harmony of the traditional and the new, buy this cd - you won't regret it!"
