Product Description On May 22, 2007 a remarkable concert was held in a Persian garden in Tehran. With the help of both the Italian and Norwegian Embassies, two Iranian sisters, Mahsa and Marjan Vahdat performed without veils and bravely chose to use their music as a weapon against the oppression of women in their country. This concert was recorded and released by Norwegian label, Kirkelig Kulturverksted (KKV), late last year. Songs From a Persian Garden was produced by Erik Hillestad who also put together the critically acclaimed Lullabies From The Axis of Evil. ...If we want to understand what treasures we may find in the fantastic country of Iran, we should listen to the magic and the power given to its music and poetry. The fact that women in this huge country of 70 million people will never stop singing wherever they can and because of the intolerant doctrines and laws, Iranian officials contribute to making their singing one of the most powerful weapons to fight all kinds of reduction of the human rights in their country. --Erik Hillestad The US version of Songs From A Persian Garden will also include a duet with Mahsa and Melissa Etheridge on Bob Dylan s I Shall Be Released . The liner notes have a very pointed sting to them directed at Bush's Amerika and at the repressive Irano-fascists, but the music is as sublime and poetic as anything can be. The occasion for this recording was a private reception at the Italian Consulate in Tehran. The Scandinavians who are the band had the very good sense to bring their digital recorded and thus these two women were recorded without the Iranian mysogynist government aware.
And what a service the band has rendered to the rest of the world. These two sisters sing as though their voices were touched by God. And the passion they bring to a number of songs, including ones by Rumi, will leave you shattered. It is just astounding how powerful this music is. And it's all done live. No overdubs. God knows how they rehearsed and selected the material. This recording concludes with "I shall be released." I was knocked to my knees in tears. Dylan and the Band didn't render near as meaningfully as these girls have. I have read in fRoots magazine that a second recording has been smuggled out of Iran. I hope Amazon will offer it when it is released in the West. I would encourage anyone with an avocation for world music as a way to resolve the cultural wars that polticians would prefer that we wage to listen to this disc. It's humanity and compassion will change you." |
