Synopsis

Album Description
Immediately following a seven year stint at the center of the Muddy Waters Blues Band, Luther `Guitar Junior' Johnson formed his own band The Magic Rockers and recorded this album. With Doin' the Sugar Too Luther takes the blues into overdrive, laying down upbeat rhythms, swinging grooves, heaping servings of masterfully expressive lead guitar, and heartfelt vocals of uncommon maturity and power. With sympathetic backing from Ron Levy on organ and piano, augmented by the Roomful of Blues Horns. -- Paul Bernard, from his liner notes

CD Reviews

Fat Bouncy Chicago Strat Blues! - A desert island disc.
Patrick J Hayden | Minneapolis, MN United States | 09/05/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Some Blues can get really depressing and melancholy, but not Luther. He gets a groove going that will make you wanna dance (1,2,3,7, more) or he plays slower empathetic blues jams that place him on par with the greats (4,5,6, more). Luther's guitar style is solid but not intrusive (he was Muddy Waters guitarist for 7 years, so he knows how to blend). Shades of Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters and all three Kings.I think this is one of the most underappreciated blues CDs there is - a desert island disc. Luther is the real deal. Find out why."
Feel good, go for the throat, and don't let up, hot stuff!!!

"This is a great set if you want to feel what the rockin' blues are all about. Luther plays a hot guitar and his vocals are right on target with the rest of the band. Ron Levy's B-3 is solid, and Room Full Of Blues horn section gives this just the right amount of soul to get you going. If you are a fan of the blues, get this, if you want to pick something up to have a tasty blues CD, pick this up, or if you're in the market for just a good rockin' blues CD to enhance your collection, get this CD, you will not be dissapointed."
