CD Reviews

A note from one of the producers

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I helped record, mix, and produce this CD, so obviously my review will be a little biased. I make no pretense about giving an unbiased review, and mainly I just hope to give you some extra information which may intrigue you and make you want to give our music a try.

In working with Dave's (who did all of the arrangements) music for as much as I have, I have a huge appreciation for how much he puts into these arrangements. He captures as much as possible from the original song as he can, and then exploiting the versatility of the cello, he often adds even more. There are inner harmonies which he weaves in which are often hard to hear even when you're listening for them, but which add a depth and complexity to the music. Dave's also big into research, and will listen to as many different versions of a song as he can get his hands on, and sometimes he incorporates elements from different versions to come up with a version which contains the elements he likes best. He also likes to weave little classical excerpts into the music, and most of the songs have classical introductions which were meant to keep audiences guessing during our live shows. He's not afraid to bring the classical part back when he needs an interlude from the rock music, as is so beautifully illustrated in Hotel California.

All of the cellists are classically trained (and in fact, all were or still are in the Saybrook College Orchestra, whose cello section Low Strung sprung out of), often with over a decade of cello playing under their belt. Dave's never held back in writing difficult music, and the phrase he's no doubt tired of hearing from me whenever I look at a new piece of music he's written is "I could play this" (I play violin in the orchestra). But on a violin, I wouldn't be able to reach down for some ground-shaking bass notes after the high fast notes are done.

Obviously, I would like for you to give our music a chance. Listen to the previews. Judge for yourself whether we've done justice to some of the best rock tunes around. We're all very proud of the work we've done, and we hope you enjoy it."
