CD Reviews

Let the "Good Times" Roll!
08/09/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I'm sad to see this title out of print! The Piano Concerto is based upon familiar (and not-so-familiar) Mennonite hymn tunes. Davies weaves them into a work that is both expressive and down-right fun. The first movement's percussion work makes it sound dated (circa 1970's), but it sings out "Shall We Gather By the River" with convincing gusto. The finale contains a capricious little melody that never seems to fully assert itself until the final chord! The "Good Times" suite offers more Davies devilry! Each movement has sparkle and wit. All in all, the music is pure "fluff"; but after a serious session with Rachmaninov's #4, this CD comes as well-deserved "ear candy.""
Modern, but accessible

"Victor Davies obviously has fun writing music. It shows in the ever-changing rhythms of the concerto and suite on this CD. From dreamy waltz to Ragtime, Davies covers the spectrum. The music passes from pastoral to raucus to tango and back. Fasten your seat belt and be ready for anything.

That said, Davies' music is evocative. Listen with your eyes shut and enjoy the kalaidescope of visions. This is a must have to complete any collection that includes modern classical music."
