CD Reviews

Fresh and original songs, beautiful voice and piano.
10/21/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Louis Lynch, composer, songwriter, singer, pianist, harpist has put together an album of original songs which are diverse in style and genre, ranging from lyrical folk rock songs of lost love ("Hollow"), to blues ("Irish Blues" and "Checkmate") and reggae ("Not a Victim"). His melodies blend styles and instrumentation-voice, piano, and harp, with guitar, violin, hammered dulcimer, and didgerie doo. The instrumental compositions, "Dance of Salome," "Clown's Best Friend," and "Astoria Waltz" are surprising and delightful in their freshness and originality. And his lyrics are evocative and unpredictable with strong images and refreshing takes on conventional themes.Louis's voice is like velvet, but with a hard edge-beautiful and soulful with powerful undercurrents. His piano playing is subtle, sensitive and very, very strong. "Rifle Johnny" is one of the most thoughtful and unpredictable anti-war songs ever written, and the arrangement will blow you away. Louis's music is unique, but if you like Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Jethro Tull, and Sting, you'll like this album. In two words: buy Sketchbook. It's truly wonderful."
