"Lloyd Cannady and the Flying Clouds, a "soul gospel" group from Plum Branch, S.C., have a sound that hearkens to the grand old days of gospel. The group has been together almost 40 years - and it shows in their tight and powerful performance.

I caught them by chance at a music festival several years ago. All present were drawn in by their infectious rhythms, high spirits and obvious joy in sharing this music. Heartfelt exuberance. By the end of the set, they had dissolved the usually restrained crowd into a joyous, dancing, hand-clapping congregation, caught up in the spirit. It was simply such good music - I had to wonder why we don't hear more of it, and why this group isn't better-known.

Sadly, the soul-gospel form seems to be dying out - current popular gospel music using more & more technological wizardry to augment and gloss over their music. Thank goodness that both Cannady and the Happyland label are dedicated to preserving the classic sounds of African-American gospel as it used to be.

I recommend this CD highly. It has become one of my true favorites - it never fails to get me moving and to lift my spirits."
