CD Reviews

Frank and Friends Smoke!
01/14/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I've been watching Frank's career for several years and have had the good fortune to see him at the Mill several times, even before he was legally old enough to be in the bar. He just gets better and better and really has come into his own here w/the huge talents of Brecker, Novak, Hochberg and Wertico.
If you like your jazz rip-roaring hot but w/a nod to the Masters, you'll love this."
Monster Live Recording of a Special Night
Walt Riker | Aurora, Illinois United States | 01/04/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I was fortunate enough to be sitting in front of the stage when this album was recorded. Too bad you can't hear all three sets of this pulsating quartet, but this CD certainly highlights a night of heavyweight blowing. You knew something special was coming when trumpet virtuoso Randy Brecker flew in to Chicago's Green Mill to record "live" with Frank Catalano, a young tenor monster who tears your head off with his unrelenting power, swing, soul and roller coaster solos. Meanwhile, the rhythmn section cooks like crazy, with Paul Wertico's uptempo cymabl whipping and dynamic solos; rocking bass from Eric Hochberg; and Novak's powerful, cascading piano. It is all that you could want from a jazz group. Hey, join me "live" at the Green Mill!"
Medeski, Martin and Wood for your head

"Frank's cover of Bubblehouse is heady and goovy at the same time. MMW would be jealous! Definately check this out if you want to see the next tenor phenom!"
