Synopsis

Album Description
Live at Chan?s is the first live album from guitarist Nick Moss, and the follow-up to his last CD, Sadie Mae, which garnered stellar reviews, strong radio support and extended features in several guitar magazines about the blues guitar prowess of Moss. That wave of acclaim for Sadie Mae also brought nominations for "Album of the Year" and "Traditional Album of the Year" from The Blues Foundation?s 2006 Blues Awards, at which Nick and the band also performed. Live at Chan?s is Nick?s present to all his fans who?ve clamored for a live recording from the Chicago Blues guitar master and it plays just like one of his shows: honest, energized and visceral! Live at Chan?s is the perfect showcase not only for Nick?s blistering, soulful guitar and vocals, but also the amazing keyboard work of Piano Willie Oshawny, the multi-talented bass, harp and guitar playing of Gerry Hundt and the solid drumming of Victor Spann, all road-tested vets with the band over the last year or so. Added to the great ensemble playing is special guest "Monster" Mike Welch for three tracks on guitar. The songs include a number of fan favorites from his previous four studio CDs, as well as some new originals and choice band covers. Born and raised near Chicago, Moss has effectively captured the classic sound of 1950s-style Chicago blues as exemplified by Muddy Waters, Howlin? Wolf, Otis Rush and Buddy Guy. Before going out on his own, Nick went to "blues school" by going out on the road and recording with such artists as Jimmy Dawkins, the Legendary Blues Band, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, Big Bill Morganfield and - most notably - legendary guitarist Jimmy Rogers, who was Nick?s primary influence and mentor for the almost three years Nick was in his band as second guitarist.

CD Reviews

RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "IF YOU LOVE ELECTRIC BLUES... T

"I-AM-AN-EVER-LOVING *ELECTRIC-BLUES-FANATIC*. If you've read any of my blues reviews before you'll know that I literally spend half of my free time researching and listening to my beloved electric blues. Sometimes I discover new unheard of blues bands... and other times I discover great electric blues that have already been discovered by many others (Though never by enough other people.)... and whenever one of those exalted moments occur... I feel I owe it to other electric blues lovers to shout it to the sky and beyond. A couple of months ago I discovered Nick Moss after "re-engineering" his career based on an interview with him in a blues magazine that I read. Because of his stated unvarnished love of *ELECTRIC-CHICAGO-BLUES*... and the fact that the haloed names of blues legends that he bowed in reverence to matched my revered list... I took a chance on his work. I first bought "LIVE AT CHAN'S COMBO PLATTER 2" (See my prior review.) and I was blown away. Based on that CD alone I went further back in his career and bought this CD which is from an even earlier time. Suffice it to say... this live blues gift from heaven is even better if possible!

There are eleven classic blues songs that total *SEVENTY-SIX-MINUTES* of unadulterated blues that cover every possible electric blues angle. There is a seven-minute-thirty-three-second instrumental... and there are string-bending songs that literally make you close your eyes and imagine some of the greats. (Who might I be referring to you're probably saying?) One absolutely bone chilling example of hard to believe complimentary praise... is "I LOVE THE WOMAN"... a ten-minute-nine-second cover of the great Freddie King... BUUUT... WAIIITTT... JUST A MINUTE!!! It may be a Freddie King song... but I am not exaggerating at all when I invoke the name of one of the all-time-greatest electric blues guitarists of them all... **STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN**! Believe me... I would not use "SRV's" name in vain! The string-bending-solo's in this song has to be Stevie channeling his unique style back to earth.

Throughout this eleven song classic-blues-lover's-dream-come-true is fabulous "harp" (harmonica) blowing. Some harp playing is full and as powerful as a diesel engine... while other harp playing is lighter and a little more delicate. There are "road-house-blues" cuts that combine it all! The ivory is at times "tickled"... and at other times "pounded" so enthusiastically that Jerry Lee Lewis would stand up and applaud. Every single song on this masterpiece is great... and I wholeheartedly recommend this to any person who has ever had even the slightest love affair with *TRUE-CHICAGO-ELECTRIC-BLUES*!

"This is smoking from start to finish. Solid playing by all throughout. A looong slow blues with not a wasted moment or note! Songs not on the studio albums, and great versions of ones that had previously appeared. How about a Volume Two?"
EXCELLENT LIVE RECORDING
