CD Reviews

First concert version of the Transcendental Etudes
Franz Liszt | 01/12/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"A bravura 74 minutes, folks. Liszt often rewrote his pieces, sometimes to the betterment of the piece, sometimes not--he never ruined a piece, mind you, but often he'd make it easier to play. Catch this savage first version of the Etudes for a real treat, played with fire by Leslie Howard."
An overwhelming and amazing album!

"After the recent death of Earl Wild, the sad departure of Erwin Nyireghihazi, Gyorgy Sandor and Louis Kentner, just Mykola Suk, Leslie Howard, Luz Moura Castro and Mijail Rudy remain aloof with the Liszt sound. It's a real proud for all (and at the same time a real pity) of us that just them still preserve the colossal and pristine sound of the master of the keyboard without enraptured poses or cheap exhibitionsims.

Acquire this album as soon as possible. Unfortunately, there are not many pianists of such caliber at this moment.

"Great playing for almost-human piano pieces! Great Howard here!! Wonderful occasion to hear the "Second serie" (1837) of the "12 études" by Liszt, practically never played, and a testimony of what Liszt was able to do with the piano!

For students, musicologists, amateurs and pianists! Recommended!!"
